Location notes:

From Johannesburg, follow the N12 to Benoni. Take the Benoni Tom Jones Street off-ramp and head into Benoni as far as Princess Avenue. Follow Princess Avenue (the main street) out of town up to the junction with the Springs and Brakpan roads. Take the R29 towards Springs for 2 kilometres and the cemetery is on the right.

Historical notes:

During the 1939/1945 War, No 2 Air School operated from the local aerodrome and an extension of No 119 Military General Hospital was established in the town.

BRAKPAN CREMATION MEMORIAL

Location notes:

Brakpan is an important mining and engineering town 37 kilometres east of Johannesburg. Brakpan Cremation Memorial is located to the left of the main entrance of Brakpan Cemetery. From the centre of town follow Prince George Avenue in the direction of Springs. The large cemetery is on the left 1.2 kilometres from the junction with Olympic Road (M46). During the 1939-1945 War 5 South African soldiers were cremated here. They are commemorated on a Memorial erected in the cemetery, their names being engraved on a bronze panel affixed to the Wall of Remembrance in the Crematorium. It bears the inscription:

Location notes:

Travelling from Alberton on the R26 go past the Voortrekker Road turn off and take the R28 Roy Louw Road off-ramp, which leads into Beaconsfield Road. Follow this road and turn into the cemetery at the sign which indicates Show Grounds/ Abbatoir. There is a military plot with 23 graves and the rest are scattered, but, with three exceptions, all are in the same area and relatively easy to find.

Historical notes:

During the Second World War, No 22 Air Training School and a military hospital were established in Vereeniging. The Old Town Cemetery contains 48 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War.
