Killed in action, south of Mutuanjamba (approximately 80km inside
Angola) during first phase of Operation Sceptic, specifically area
clearing and domination as well as establishment of tactical HQ at
Mulemba. |
Joao was badly wounded and Braz and Van Der Walt were killed when
their patrol crossed a gravel road in the kill zone of a vehicle ambush.
Large force of dug in SWAPO with mortars and machine guns were able
to inflict casualties and pin the patrol down. Reinforcements dislodged
the ambushing force, but were forced to secure the immediate area
and attend to casualties rather than pursue the enemy. When 2Lt Van
Der Walt was instantly killed by a dug in PKM machine gun, Braz went
to his aid and was hit multiple times by the same weapon. Van Der
Walt had previously been wounded in the head by ground fire while
on a C160 flight Eenhana to Ondongwa. ref "Die Buffel Struikel" by

Two troopers of 1 SSB (seconded to the 10th Panser Troopers) walked
into a "kraal", unaware of two enemy soldiers that were hiding in
one of the huts. The two troopers, Cloete and van Heerden, received
fatal shots from the enemy within the hut after identifying themselves
to the local population of the kraal. Van Heerden was apparently shot
through the forehead with a Makarov pistol and died instantly. Cover
fire was laid down by the 10th Panser Troopers which killed the enemy
soldiers in the subsequent battle that took place. |

Killed in action, north of Mulemba (approximately 80km inside Angola)
during first phase of Operation Sceptic, specifically area clearing
and domination as well as establishment of tactical HQ. |
Van Wyk was part of the same deployment as Joao, Braz and Van Der
Walt who had been killed the previous day at Mutuanjamba. A group
of SWAPO had clashed briefly with SADF units at Mulemba, and were
withdrawing northwards. A rough impromptu stopper group was set-up
and they were rewarded when SWAPO walked into them and a number were
killed. Random SWAPO mortar fire killed Van Wyk moments later. |

Killed in action, in North American F-51 Mustang #328. 2Lt J.P.
Verster was reported overdue while ferrying an aircraft between the
airfields at K-10 and K-16. The following day a report was received,
stating that a wrecked aircraft had been found north east of Sosan.
A Korean eye witness said that the aircraft, trailing black smoke,
had approached at an altitude of 100 feet before suddenly nose diving
into the ground. The pilot had attempted to bale out but was too late,
and had been killed. He was buried by the Koreans, who also placed
a cross and two wreaths on his grave. 2Lt Verster's body was later
recovered. |
