Killed in action, at Oshakati during Operation Protea, crashed whilst
bringing in casualties at night. It is said that Lamprecht was disorientated
and guided the pilot incorrectly, thus the tail rotor caught in a
barb-wire fence. Sgt Lamprecht, the co-pilot, Lt D O'Connor, several
medics and a doctor as well as the casualties tragically died. Only
the pilot survived, in Aerospatiale SA3330 Puma C #174 |

Trained as a pilot in the South African Air Force and subsequently
served with No 2 Squadron SAAF (flying Cheetahs) in the Korean conflict.
Received the USA's Distinguished Flying Cross. Unconfirmed reports
have it that he was also awarded a further USA decoration, The Air
Medal. After leaving the SAAF he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force
and was serving with the Royal Australian Air Force flying helicopters,
when he was shot down and killed during operations in Vietnam. "Lofty"
features prominently in the book "South African Flying Cheetahs in
Korea" by Dermott Moore and Peter Bagshaw, published by Ashanti Publishing. |

Killed when the Lightning crashed on approach into Bentwaters. Suffered
a double engine/reheat fire, had tried to eject but the canopy failed
to release and attempted a forced landing into Bentwaters. Unfortunately
he was unable to make the runway and the almost copybook landing into
a ploughed field was enough to cause the canopy to detach and the
ejection sequence to commence. Regrettably the seat required both
height and forward speed to enable to parachute to deploy. |

Killed in action, in North American F-51 Mustang #307. On 7 February
1951, 2Lt D.R. Leah was flying one of four Mustangs, led by Commandant
S. Theron, on a reconnaissance of the Wonsan-Hamhung area, on the
east coast of North Korea. After expending their bombs on a supply
dump, the patrol found three camouflaged vehicles on a road just north
of Yonghong, which they proceeded to strafe with their machine guns.
During 2Lt Leah's second attack, he pulled out to the right but his
starboard wing struck the ground, causing his aircraft to cartwheel
into the ground and burst into flames. The wreckage was scattered
over a wide area. |

Killed in action, in North American F-51 Mustang #362. Capt Leathers,
with 2Lt J.N. Lellyet as his No.2, was leading four aircraft on a
training flight, a simulated interdiction strike on a rail bridge
over a river. They arrived over the designated area at 10500 feet,
and commenced their attacks in echelon port formation. Shortly after
pulling out of his dive at 3000 feet, Capt Leathers looked back and
saw an explosion short of the target and a half mile to starboard.
The No.3 then reported over the radio that "No.2 has gone in.". No.3
and No.4 aircraft proceeded to orbit the crash site while Capt Leathers
flew back to K-10 to report the accident, as he was unable to radio
them. Lt Lellyet's body was recovered. |

Killed in action, in North American F-51 Mustang #333. 2Lt T. Liebenberg,
a new pilot in the squadron, was about to undertake his first mission
from K-10. Take off time was approximately 07H00 and 2Lt Liebenberg,
in the No.4 position, was the last to take off. As his aircraft gathered
speed it started veering to the left, off the runway in the direction
of the control tower. It struck a ditch, wiping the undercarriage
off, and collided with a parked American aircraft, bursting into flames
as it did so. He died in the resulting fire. |

Killed in action, in Battle of Ebo. He was the driver of the armoured
car commanded by Lt J du Toit. They were oredered forward toward the
bridge over the Massaba river. As the car approached the bridge it
was hit with a hollow charge round from a 76mm cannon and he was instantly
killed. the car ended up on its side in the river. |
Son of Mrs. A. Lombard. On Tuesday July 11 2006 Mr. Henk van Zyl
was physically taken to the two gravesites, was able, through an interpreter
and in the presence of about five Angolan government officials, able
to speak to two headmen. He was taken to the grave of Trooper Niel
Lombard of B Squadron 1SSB who was killed at the bridge over the Massaba
River. His grave is virtually on the cross roads of two pathways.
After 31 years, one cannot see that there is a grave there but the
headman of that area after pacing off from one reference point to
another, made a cross on the ground with his toe and said here is
where I buried the man after pulling him out of the “tank.” |
