Killed in action, in Sector 10, landmine |
Son of Mr. & Mrs. S. S. Hansen. Whilst on a vehicle patrol from
Okankolo north-east along the Odilla river bed, the Buffel that Lt
Hansen was in hit two landmines. The two mines under the vehicle were
initiated by one in the track. A hole was punched directly through
the base of the vehicle which then caught fire from the fuel tanks.
The resulting explosion killed Lt Hansen. |

Killed in action, in North American F-51 Mustang #375. A four aircraft
'C' Flight formation, led by Lt Baransky, were en route to their assigned
target at CT062459. After climbing through cloud to 1000 feet, Capt
R.A. Harburn, flying in the No.2 position, reported that his aircraft
was leaking something. On checking, Lt Baransky discovered that the
starboard side of Capt Harburn's aircraft was covered in oil, and
he ordered the latter to return to base at K-46. He then ordered the
remaining two aircraft to join with 'B' Flight, as he would escort
Capt Harburn back to base. The two pilots then requested permission
to drop their bombs, and were instructed to do so either north or
south of K-46. When five miles from K-46, Lt Baransky ordered Capt
Harburn to drop his bombs in the nearby river, which Capt Harburn
proceeded to do. He then called Lt Branasky to ask if the latter had
seen his bombs drop, and received a negative response. Lt Baransky
told Capt Harburn to fly past the airfield Control Tower for an inspection,
and shortly after this the Control Tower reported that Capt Harburn's
Mustang had crashed into the ground and burst into flames. It appears
that he did attempt to bale out, but from marks found on his aircraft's
cockpit canopy, he may have been struck in the head by the canopy
as it was released, and this rendered him unconcious. |

Ashes at AGS Church in Goodwood, Cape Town |
Died on active service - died after he crashed his motorcycle into
a fixed-wing aircraft. Major André Hattingh, an Oryx pilot, was riding
to work Ysterplaat Air Force base on his motorcycle on Thursday morning.
He apparently saw two vehicle lights approaching and thought it was
a car, but it was the lights of a tractor towing a Dakota aircraft
from the hangar to the runway. Hattingh veered to the left, but crashed
into the tail wing of the aircraft and his motorcycle slid to one
side. He was airlifted to 2 Military Hospital in Wynberg, where he
was admitted with broken ribs and a broken nose. An emergency operation
was carried out, but because Hattingh's chest was severely injured,
he lost a vast quantity of blood. His heart apparently stopped during
surgery, but doctors managed to resuscitate him. His condition worsened
later and he died of internal bleeding. |
Husband of Annelien Hattingh and father of sons Joe (23), Koos (21)
and André (18). Joe, the eldest, was also a SAAF helicopter pilot,
based at AFB Bloemspruit. The youngest son, André, was in Matric at
Hoërskool Tygerberg. Maj. Hattingh took part in the rescue operation
when the Ikan Tanda sank off the coast of Scarborough in Sept 2001.
Eighteen lives were saved. He also took part in rescue operations
in Mozambique and Lesotho, and in 2000 helped fight large fires in
the Cape Peninsula. He had been to Antartica as well. His funeral
was held at the AGS Church in Goodwood, Cape Town, followed by cremation.
Maj. Hattingh lived in Welgemoed and was awarded the Honorus Crux
and the Air Force Cross. He joined the SAAF in 1973. Brother: Hennie
Hattingh. In 2007 Annelien (then married to Mr. Crafford and living
in Pretoria) sued the SAAF for R4-million. Mr. Crafford was the chaplain
at Maj. Hattingh's funeral. His wife had died of a stroke three months
prior. Later that year, Maj. Hattingh was posthumously awarded the
Ad Astra medal for a rescue operation in 2001. |

Son of Tertia Hedenskog of Claremont, South Africa. Originally from
South Africa. His memorial service was held at the Methodist Church
in Brooklyn, Pretoria, and was packed with mourners. The church was
so full that those who arrived late had to stand at the back. Young
people, Hedenskog's friends from Valhalla Primary School, Sutherland
High School in Centurion and Rhodes University, dominated the congregation.
The Royal Marine's mother, Tertia, and sisters Megan and Eva, who
live in Cape Town, attended. His father, Nick, who has been divorced
from his mother for a number of years and lives in Johannesburg, did
not attend. His father was in a nursing home in Johannesburg and had
taken the news very badly. Hedenskog had joined the Royal Marines
in November 2000 after leaving university with a degree in human movement
studies. Apart from his stint in Iraq, Hedenskog had also served in
Afghanistan. He was a member of the elite group of Marines known as
Y Troop. |

Killed in action, in North American F-51 Mustang #372. Major Mouton
led a three aircraft flight, comprising himself, Lt J.O. Holtzhausen
in the No.2 position and Capt van der Merwe in the No.3 position.
Their target was a railroad at YE5004, which they attacked from 7500
feet. Visibility over the target was poor, with low cloud and haze.
Prior to his attack, Major Mouton noticed that both his No.2 and No.3
were in position, and after the attack he headed for the form up point
and called his flight to check in. Only No.3 did so. On calling Lt
Holtzhausen again, Major Mouton received a response, to the effect
that Lt Holtzhausen was joining an American flight for the return
home. However, he failed to arrive with any of the American flights
involved in the attack, and was not heard of again. |
