NICOSIA WAR CEMETERY

Nicosia is the principal town of the Greek Section of the island of Cyprus, but adjoins Turkish territory. The border between the two communities is known as the "buffer zone" and the "green line", protected by UNFICYP (United Nation Forces in Cyprus). The war cemetery is 4 kilometres west of Nicosia, on the Myrtou road, near to Wayne's Keep and adjoins the military cemetery. Access to both the war and military cemeteries is difficult as they are in the "buffer zone" and it is NOT recommended from the Turkish side. Visitors require permission to enter the cemeteries and a United Nations escort is necessary and photography is restricted (discreet photographs of headstones only). Visits are permitted between 09.00 and 12.00 Monday to Friday. Visits from Southern Cyprus (Greek controlled area):- Applications must be made by telephone or in writing to the following address before the intended visit, giving at least 5 days notice: Regimental Sergeant Major UNFICYP Support Regiment UNFICYP BFPO 567 Tel: 00 357 22 666109 / 864760 / 864761 / 864114 Fax: 00 357 22 864763 This will give the operator of Joint Operations Centre (JOC). Enquirers should then ask for the RSM or Humanitarian Section. Arrangements will then be made for the visit. Visits from Northern Cyprus (Turkish controlled area):- The procedure is to contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Turkish Area and ask for permission to visit Waynes Keep. This can be fraught with many problems and obstacles. The easiest way is to contact Major J P Casey at the British High Commission, Nicosia - Tel 2283861 Monday to Friday 0730 - 1400, or 2283862 after hours. British High Commission, Nicosia - Telephone numbers during silent hours: 00 357 22 2861100 - if dialling in the South 00 357 22 283862 - if dialling in the North
